Two different jobs
A bed assist handle is a short handle that sits at the side of the bed. It gives something firm to hold when sitting up, turning over or standing. Most people who are steady once on their feet need only this.
A longer bed rail runs further along the mattress. It's meant to help with repositioning and to remind someone where the edge of the bed is. It is not a restraint, and it shouldn't be used to keep someone in bed.
The US safety standard
Since August 2023, adult portable bed rails sold in the US must meet a federal safety standard, 16 CFR 1270, which adopts the industry standard ASTM F3186. It covers rails and bed handles meant for adult beds at home. The standard tests for gaps that can trap a head or neck, checks that the rail stays attached to the bed, and requires clear warning labels.
The rule exists for a serious reason. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission counted 284 deaths linked to adult portable bed rails between 2003 and 2021, most of them people aged 70 and over, usually from being caught between the rail and the mattress.
Where entrapment happens
- Between the rail and the side of the mattress. This gap grows if the mattress is soft, too thin or slides away from the rail.
- Inside the rail's own openings, between its bars.
- At the ends of the rail, between the rail and the headboard or footboard.
Before you buy
- Check it meets the standard. Look for a statement that it complies with 16 CFR 1270 or ASTM F3186, and a permanent warning label on the product itself.
- Match the mattress. The rail should state a mattress thickness range. Measure yours and stay inside it.
- Look at how it attaches. A strap or anchor that ties the rail to the bed frame keeps it from sliding away and opening a gap.
- Check the bed type. Many rails aren't made for adjustable beds, platform beds or very low beds. The listing should say.
After you fit it
- Push the mattress hard against the rail. If you can open a gap with your hand, tighten the strap or don't use it.
- Recheck the fit every week and after changing sheets, since mattresses shift.
- Keep the area around the rail clear, with a light the person can reach or one that turns on by itself.
Our bed rail
Abrielder's bed rail is in development. It has a 16.5-inch grip, a motion night light and a strap to the bed frame. We're having it tested to 16 CFR 1270 at an independent lab, and we won't sell it until it passes. Get a note when it's ready.
